USBN & Read and Listen
The problem
ISBNs identify editions. A subscriber searching for a title meets a wall of near-duplicates, and the recommendation engine treats them as different books – so demand for one work is scattered across a dozen records.
The solution
Storytel introduced the USBN (Universal Selective Book Number), an identifier that consolidates every edition, format and translation of a work into a single entity for discovery and personalisation. Released alongside it: “Read and Listen”, which synchronises text highlighting to audio at word level for readers with concentration difficulties, and search inside non-fiction audiobooks.
What is distinctive
A commercial platform solving a metadata problem the standards layer has not. Worth noting precisely because of its limitation: the USBN is Storytel's own identifier, not an industry standard.
Evidence
- USBN launched 20 October 2025; Story Scan (photograph a cover to find the audio or ebook) rolled out across all markets in September 2025.
- Full-year 2025 reporting: over 2.6 million paying subscribers and revenue of SEK 4,023m, up 6%.
- Streaming catalogue of more than 1.8 million titles in 55 languages.
